In a remote field an hour east of Portland sits a traditional Maine farmhouse and barn. Fifty years ago the owners converted the barn into a second dwelling for their children, who still use it for much of the summer. If being part of a family place appeals to you, a few weeks each summer are available for rent to other than family members.

Downstairs, a generous, sunny living room has a dining area at one end, a fireplace and shelves of books, games and puzzles for all ages. A large eat-in kitchen, a washer and dryer and a first floor half-bath make the Barn perfect for family vacations. A large screened porch, facing the river and the ocean, provides an additional living space, and is perfect for outdoor dining.

Upstairs, the Barn sleeps seven in three double bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed, and one single bedroom, sharing a full bath.

The view from the Barn is across fields and down a tidal river, ending with the sea and nearby islands. The river is an ideal place for bird-watching and exploring in the canoe or theĀ  kayak kept in the Barn.

The Barn is surrounded by a 700-acre conservation area with trails, wetlands, two tidal rivers and a small mountain. A quarter-mile walk down a private road is a mile-long white sand beach, a wonderful place for swimming, building sand castles, collecting shells or just wandering. From the top of the mountain are views of the coast stretching from Portland to Monhegan, an archipelago of islands and, on a clear day, views of snow-covered Mt. Washington.

Within a few miles are stores with excellent fresh organic vegetables, fruits and flowers, meat, fish, cheese, and wine, and of course the seafood is unparalleled. Exploring coastal Maine is a never-ending enjoyment, and a small town twenty minutes away has an outstanding marine museum, a beautiful library and a variety of good restaurants.
