An hour east of Portland is Morse Mountain, the highest hill on the coast between Mount Desert and Florida. Perched on its eastern flank is a 200-year-old saltwater farm. The Farmhouse at Morse Farm was transformed into a summer home in the 1930’s

The character of the Farmhouse has been lovingly maintained. In the kitchen several rocking chairs and a breakfast table are centered on a gas-fired cast-iron cookstove. A separate sinkroom has a large slate sink. A first-floor bathroom with a shower is tucked behind the kitchen.

Completing the ground floor is the living-dining room, stretching the width of the house, and a study with an electric piano. These rooms have shelves of books, games and toys for all ages.

On the second floor are the bedrooms, one with a queen bed, one with a full bed and one low-ceilinged children’s room with twin single beds. A generous bathroom with shower (no tub) rounds out the floor.

Within a few miles are stores with excellent fresh organic vegetables, fruits and flowers, meat, fish, cheese, and wine, and of course the seafood is unparalleled. Exploring coastal Maine is a never-ending enjoyment, and a small town twenty minutes away has an outstanding marine museum, a beautiful library and a variety of good restaurants.

Morse Farm is in the middle of a 700-acre conservation area with trails, wetlands, two tidal rivers and a small mountain. From the Farmhouse, the view across fields and down a tidal river ends with the sea and nearby islands. The river is an ideal place for bird-watching and exploring in the canoe or the kayak kept in the Barn next door and used by both houses. A quarter-mile walk from Morse Farm is a mile-long white sand beach, the perfect place for swimming, building sand castles, collecting shells or just wandering. From the top of the mountain are views of the coast stretching from Portland to Monhegan, an archipelago of islands and, on a clear day, views of snow-covered Mt. Washington.
