An hour east of Portland, on a remote bluff overlooking a two-mile-long white sand beach, is an elegant Maine summer house. Built in the 1930's, it remains in the family of the original owners.

The house can sleep eight to ten people comfortably, and most bedrooms have large windows facing the ocean views to the south. Two double bedrooms upstairs (one with a queen bed) and two double bedrooms downstairs each have a private bath. Two small single bedrooms, one with its own bath, are perfect for younger visitors. Many children have grown up in this house, but it is not suitable for 'roughhousing'.

The heart of the house is a 40-foot living room with a stone fireplace, several seating areas and a generous dining area. Wide sliding glass doors open on one side to breathtaking views of the ocean, on the other to a screened dining porch. Terraces and porches upstairs and down allow an endless variety of indoor and outdoor experience. Bookcases throughout the house hold books, puzzles and games for all ages. The kitchen has modern appliances.

The house sits in the middle of a 700-acre conservation area with trails, wetlands, two tidal rivers and a small mountain. From the top of the mountain stretch views of the coast from Portland to Monhegan, an archipelago of islands and on a clear day, views of snow-covered Mt. Washington. The beach, a short walk from the house, is wonderful for swimming, building sand castles, collecting shells or just wandering.

Situated at the end of a two-mile private road, the house is designed for reflection, true to a time when a Maine vacation meant staying in one place, enjoying matchless scenery and complete quiet.

Within a few miles, stores offer fresh organic vegetables, fruits and flowers, meat, fish, cheese and wine, and of course the seafood is unparalleled. Exploration of coastal Maine is a never-ending enjoyment, and a small town half an hour away harbors an outstanding marine museum, a beautiful library and several good restaurants.
